Did it for an assignment after reading about the history of alphabets. Apparently ancient Greeks used to do something called “boustrophedon” which means “to plow a field with an ox.” It means that they wrote from right to left as usual but every other line went from left to right and the characters would be mirrored. I wanted to use that somehow but for lack of content to demonstrate a writing style, I just chose my favorite riddle from The Hobbit.

I just finished up my color theory final project. The assignment was to do whatever I wanted. That’s always a popular end-of-semester project, but it’s so intimidating! Because I don’t know how much work to do really. And I suspect that I didn’t do enough for this one. I guess I’ll find out at the critique tomorrow. But anyway, what I chose to do was create album art for my friend Marc Schulz who is a DJ by the name of DJ When. I had wanted to do it anyway so it just worked out that I had an open-ended project and no ideas except this. So what follows is the turn-in-for-class-get-it-done-on-time version. I’m sure he and I will sit down and rework things once the semester’s over, before they’re actually printed. Voila.

That’s my La Petite Joy Printing Press logo down there. I started putting the name on almost everything I print for school (illustration projects, silkscreen, photo books…) last fall. It just stuck.

It looks so simple and lame now. But I think that once the shit’s inside, it will  serve its purpose well.

I’m happy with it I think. At least for now.  It’s just a simple construction of folded card stock for the debut album. Once he’s rich and famous in like a week we’ll upgrade to fancy plastic cases and vinyl and whatnot.

I’ve been so obsessed with isometric grids lately, and even after this I’m still not tired of them. And I tried out some anaglyphs. Christopher thinks 3D glasses should be included, which of course would be cool, but would totally reveal the fact that they don’t work!

By the way I think everyone should know that this is my cat Stevesie right this second, asleep with his head on my knee, tongue halfway out, wif wittle twitching paws:

So these came out like garbage.

But the Iron & Wine show was completely amazing and everything I hoped for except for to hear my two favorite songs of his, Upward Over the Mountain and Boy with a Coin. He played neither, but Caity saw him here and in Jacksonville a couple  days ago and he apparently played the former there D:

The opening  band, NOMO was really good, too. Very fun.

But this one’s extra short! It’s only Wednesday and all I’ve got left to do is meet my photo prof at 4:30 and I’m done until Monday. Except I want to get a TON of shit out of the way on my extra long weekend, namely this stupid silly “collection” project I have get to do for GD1. We’re finally at the last steps of it and it seems (I’m never completely sure) that we’re designing exhibition catalogs, posters, and postcards for imaginary exhibitions of our “collections” which in my case is 80 or so photos of books taken at the same angle. Not an exhibition I would pay to see. Anyway here’s the title:

It sucks that I haven’t done another Desk Diary entry. I like it a lot and I really want to keep up with it, but I haven’t exactly been living at home where my desk is for awhile now. With any luck I’ll be moving in December into DIYno and will have my desk and all my lovely crap with me again. I can’t wait. Until then, though I’ve set up a temporary working area on a desk in DIYno (that I guess might be permanent once I move, I just have a hard time calling anything “mine” while I’m not paying rent there, despite Christopher’s assurance that it’s fine) that I can photograph because I have been working there a lot. OK OK I will.

ALSO, screw any guy who thinks it’s OK/funny/flattering to whistle/shout “compliments” at passing girls. Or rather, I’d advise anyone to not screw these guys. Out of spite and to teach them that this is disgusting, demeaning behavior. And embarrassing for both parties. You may think yourself courageous for “going out on a limb,” but the fact that you are shouting from the safety of your car, driving away immediately without time for the recipient’s response (negative or no) proves that you are not as ballsy as you think. What do you expect? That we’re going to think “oh my! He noticed I’m a girl! I’d better not let this stud get away!” and chase desperately after you? or that a description of your car and license plate number are going to show up on missed connections with something like “can’t stop thinking about you blue Bronco boy. Hope to hear your sweet whistling again soon…”? Don’t hold your breath. Or better yet, go ahead.

I’ve been calling it “road trip still lifes” but it’s sort of evolved to I’m not sure what yet. I’m trying to express the confinement and boredom and general atmosphere felt on a long road trip with friends. And for some reason I like squares right now.

I think we were supposed to start with the text and make imagery based on it. And it had to have something to do with the month or season. But we didn’t want to be cliche and illustrate the holidays and/or weather you associate with that month, so we illustrated the obscure holidays nobody’s ever heard of (except Oktoberfest, of course, I had to include it) and made up text to go with it. Ergo dumbass limerick!

I guess it’s kind of small so you cant see what the holidays are, and I’m sure you’re dying to know so:
